DFI Journey - Day 1

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

What I found interesting was how the Manaiakalani Trust was established and how it started waaaayyyyy back in 2006 (my children were only 13, 9 and 5). I was intrigued to hear how the decision was made to call the project Manaiakalani as I always wondered where this came from as I knew it was of Māori descent. I can only imagine how it must have been for those innovators when the programme first started with using only a handful of computers. I know we only had one PC (and possibly a laptop) in our household at the time and that was difficult to make sure that everyone had their allocated time (especially as I was also studying for my ECE degree, at the time) :).

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I think what I took the most out of the day was how I can use headings in my Goggle Docs documents. I didn't realise that these could then allow me to have a table of contents that will take you to a particular part of the document. One of my roles in my team is to write Welcome to Rāwhiti learning stories to all the children. I usually pre-write these in Microsoft Word and have to scroll down to find the appropriate child. I will now use a Goggle Doc and use headings to help me save time to find the appropriate child :).

I also loved finding out about how to clean up my Google Drive. I used to have some folders but didn't use them effectively so I have started to clean up my drive using an * to help keep all the important folders being listed first.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

As I work in a Year 0-2 studio and we use Ipads and Seesaw I'm not sure how I can implement some of the things that I learnt. I did like the idea that Vicki gave us about when she used to want children to name a document she would encourage them to use their initials at the start. This could be something that I could do with my pre-writers since some are still learning how to write their full name. So for example when they are naming their pieces of work during our Responding to Literacy block some children could just write their initials if they are feeling frustrated if they can't manage all their name.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

The short cut of the headings will be a great time saver for me. I also loved how to create a table in Google Docs today and how the pictures were so easy to align rather than trying to muck around with Word :). Now that I have set up another Google account I can watch my Youtube, Disney+, Netflix in my own account and people at school can't see what I've looked at recently when I share my screen :).

  1. Kia ora Michelle,
I also find it incredible thinking back to 2006 and the technology we had avaiable at the time. I was at Uni in Dunedin and used my parents login details to connect to the internet on my laptop through the phone line in our flat! And to think about what the Manaiakalani cluster were starting to innovate with - just incredible! I'm so glad the headings will be useful for you with your learning stories. It was great to have you join us on Thursday afternoon.

  2. Hi Vicki
I like your honest comments and the technological journey you remember. The table you made in google docs is such a useful tool. Although you have the junior school at the moment, you never know when you might change levels and this will come into it's own.

  3. Kia ora Michelle,

2006 is a very long time ago, especially when you think about your own children. I was knee deep in nappies and feeding.

Great to see you finding application for your learning in your work life and personal life. It does make things much easier when you seperate your school emails from your home emails. I smiled at the hiding what you are watching online too. What's your recommendation for a series at the moment.

Looking forward to reading your next reflection,
    Sharon
