DFI Journey - Day 7
What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Ubiquitous Learning - Anytime, Anywhere, Anyplace for everyone.
This was interesting to listen to today. I never knew what this meant before and it was certainly helpful to have this explained.
We certainly got to use this in practice when we were in lockdown last year. We also have to remember that by having our lessons/learning on our class site our students can partake outside the 'normal' school hours. In Rongo-mā-tāne we have our weekly plans on our class site and pdf's of our home learning worksheets which whānau may want to use while at home (if the child's pukapuka isn't there).
It was so interesting to hear that how children in a decile 1 school child compared to a decile 10 school child can hear 30,000,000 fewer words than their counterparts. I always knew that the statistics were very high but never to this degree. I have certainly seen this at our decile 3 school and how some children come to school with a sound knowledge of number, literacy, and social competence compared to their counterparts. I do wonder if this is because of the community that we work in, their environments, trauma, or other factors that might enable children's prior knowledge.
It is always good to remember that TECHNOLOGY - it's not just a tool. If we are using it just as a tool then we should seek help from co-workers to find out how we can use it differently.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Possibly using Screencastify or Explain Everything to document children's learning and to help others. See below :).
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
In August I am having some time off for the first anniversary of my Dad's passing. I'm wondering since I'm going to be away for the week if I could set up a Google Meet with them to still be connected with them in some way. I will share this idea with my team and see if there is a way to achieve this,
I would really like to experiment with tamariki taking videos of their peers engaged with our new trolley activities. This would be great for their learning (and mine) and then we could use it daily to show how we use each piece of equipment rather than an adult having to explain it each time. I'm not quite sure how I could get this started (set up), would like to talk to Sharon for some ideas. At the moment we are just trying to have them in the 'right place at the right time'.
I'm wondering how we can use Being CyberSmart in Rongo-mā-tāne as we have had a few issues lately regarding children being on the wrong apps (YouTube) at the wrong time. I really liked the idea of using the term CyberSmart rather than CyberSafe as it is taking a stand to come from a positive rather than a negative framework.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Having a play around with Explain Everything was great fun and it got me thinking about how can I use this in my Miro kaiāwhina group to help me be timewise. It seems lately, that all I do is prep or work for this new group and don't actually have time or energy to have a life outside of my 'glass oblong environment'.
What did I enjoy the most?
I really enjoyed having the opportunity to play around with Explain Everything. I see this working in a variety of ways in our studio and especially for Miro. I need to find some more time to try and have more of a play with it to gain some more confidence.
What did I not enjoy?
I certainly wasn't a fan of using a Chromebook. It certainly reminded me of how students must feel when they are learning a new skill, using a new piece of equipment or when their device isn't 'doing what it's supposed to be doing'.
Side note - I need to try and find my photos of my Explain Everything presentation as I can't seem to find them on my laptop anywhere???? Thought I had sent it to myself and saved it somewhere, lol.
